Santa Maria High School FFA Seniors, Melissa Lua and Jhoana Hernandez, were two of seventy-five California FFA members selected to attend the Sacramento Leadership Experience this past week.
California FFA hosts its premier Leadership Development Conference, each year in Sacramento. Students apply through FFA and then the top graduating senior FFA members from California are selected to step into the role of one of California’s State Legislators.
Lua and Hernandez were assigned a specific California district and spent four days learning about California government, issues in agriculture and ethics, water, natural resources, food and nutrition, and education.
At the end of the week, these two Santa Maria FFA members had the opportunity to conduct mock legislation they had drafted during the conference on the chamber floor of the state assembly.
Lua stated, “This conference was one of the most memorable yet. It was an amazing experience to meet with our representatives and share more with them about our organization. This conference was a great insight into California government!”
Hernandez stated, “Being able to attend SLE was an amazing experience! This conference allowed me to get an insight into our government and learn more about politics. The skills I learned will definitely help me in pursuing a career in Agriculture and Political Science.”
The young ladies also had the opportunity to meet with District Assembly Member Gregg Hart and District Senator Monique Limón.
Sacramento Leadership Experience is California FFA’s premier capstone conference.
