The Santa Maria High School Alpine Club recently highlighted its rock-climbing past, from the 1960s, with an outdoor movie night.

More than 35 students enjoyed good company, pizza provided by the club, and viewed the film, “TheDawn Wall.” The club no longer does rock climbing, but still participates in numerous outdoor hiking adventures and takes an annual camping trip to Yosemite National Park in the spring.

Prior to their trip to Yosemite in May, they plan to hold their next outdoor movie night to view the film “Free Solo” this spring.

The club currently has over 40 active members and will be taking their next hiking trip to the Pismo Preserve in March.

The idea for the outdoor movie night happened during the pandemic when the club was unable to travel. “It was challenging to keep a hiking and camping club together over the pandemic,’’ said Saint Teacher and Club Advisor Amy Hennings. “We found new and interesting ways to make the club valid, including outdoor jog-a-thons, virtual hiking challenges, and outdoor movie nights – using a big outdoor movie screen. The movie nights have remained popular and have become an annual tradition since the pandemic.”
