Our Students Opinions: Black Friday

Are you a Black Friday shopper? See what our students say below.

CNBC

With Thanksgiving break nearly underway, we all can look forward to the days off that we can spend with family, catching up on homework, or plain-out sleeping through the entire break. In addition to Thanksgiving, this holiday also features another special day, that day being Black Friday. Black Friday is considered the start to the “Christmas Shopping Season” where people can buy their gifts for friends and family early.

Black Friday is believed to be named as such because retailers were to begin to profit, marking their profits from red, being a loss, to black, being a gain. This change in pen began to be noticed every Friday after Thanksgiving, thus, it began to be named Black Friday.

What about our students? I asked the two questions, “Are you a black friday shopper?” and “What deals might you be looking out for?” Here are their responses.

Senior Oswaldo Hernandez-Perez says, “I love going Black Friday shopping, but I am more interested in Cyber Monday.” Oswaldo says. “Over time, I like thinking about things I want to buy for my relatives. Sometimes, I don’t really know what I am going to buy for them, so why go to the store and shop through the shelves when I can go online and look through everything?” When asked what deals he would be looking out for, Oswaldo said, “You know when it says up to sixty percent off? I always think, ‘Sixty percent off, that’s probably going to be the worst deal out there for something that you don’t need. So I, mainly, am looking when it’s just, specifically, the whole store is sixty percent off.”

Senior Evan Hoyos said, “Yeah, I like to look for video game stuff mostly, see what deals I can get on some cheap games.” When asked what deals he would be looking out for Right now, Evan says, “I’m looking at Nintendo deals.”

Senior Abraham Carrillo says, “Unfortunately, I am not a Black Friday shopper.”

Junior Julian Silva says, “I am not a Black Friday shopper, I shop online before Black Friday.” When asked what deals he would be looking out for, Julian says, “I would be looking for Xbox hardware and probably two more controllers.”

I know that I am certainly looking forward to Black Friday, especially Cyber Monday. I wish every shopper good luck in this time.

Nathan Ochoa, Contributor
Hello, my name is Nathan Ochoa, and I am a senior attending SMHS (surprise). I was born here in Santa Maria on December 11, 2005 and have lived here my entire life. My brother, who some may know, attends UCLA as of now. My plan for the future is to attend AHC and possibly move on to another college. I want to major in either engineering or photography. In my free time, I enjoy sleeping, reading, and gaming. I sleep at a 'less than reasonable' time, but who doesn't now, right? My favorite book would be The Martian, by Andy Weir, where astronaut Mark Watney is accidently left behind on Mars because his crew thought he had died. My favorite games are Ultrakill and Hollow Knight, to name a few, as there are too many to name. I love to travel, and have been to many major cities in the United States. I have been to Chicago, San Francisco, New York, Las Vegas, Seattle, San Diego, and Honolulu in that order. My favorite being Chicago for many reasons. I am going to Japan with Mrs. Van D on spring break of 2024. It will be my first time out of the country, and what makes it scary is the fact that I am going without my parents or family, just my teacher and some friends. I was not entirely sure what I wanted to do this year, as I only have two required classes. I chose to do journalism because I know Mrs. Van D and I always wanted to improve my writing. Writing for this site has always been a want for me, and now I finally can. I hope to improve the Breeze as much as I can, and I cannot wait to see what happens. I am excited to be a contributor this year.
