SMHS Student places 12th In CIF Tournament

McNutt at California Masters competition for Girls Wrestling

Dedication and hard work is what makes a great athlete. Junior, Surray Mcnutt is a perfect example. Surray Mcnutt is on the SMHS girls wrestling team and has been wrestling for six years now. On Febuary 24th Surray did an amazing job at placing 12th in CIF. Throughout the CIF tournament Surray Mcnutt had her moments and would go on to place twelve in the state. It may not seem like much but only a handful of other girls get to make it to masters so it’s amazing that she was able to be a part of that handful.

I asked her a couple of questions about her experience, and she replied, “honestly, 12th doesn’t seem to great but only 32 girls in the whole state of California make it there and I was proud that I was even one of them.” Her performance was great and she definitely made her school proud. Another thing I asked her is how she felt during her CIF matches. She stated that, “I was feeling very nervous because there was a lot of competition but in the end, I pulled through and made it to masters.”

The girls wrestling team has always been one of our school’s better sports teams. They have accomplished things like being league champions for two years in a row at one point throughout 2019 and 2020. Four girls made it to state last year before losing to PV and placing second. The girls wrestling team has been dominant the past few years and hopefully continues to be.

If this is something that you would be willing to try out, girls wrestling freestyle practices Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 4p.m weights followed by practice.
