FBLA Raises Money for the March of Dimes

Every year, our students raise funds to help mothers and their unborn babies.

In October of 2021, SMHS Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) supported the March of Dimes. March of Dimes is a nonprofit organization that works to improve the health of mothers and babies. March of Dimes is one of FBLA’s national philanthropies. The money from the fundraiser went directly to the March of Dimes.

There was a total of twenty-two teachers and staff who supported the fundraiser by having a collection box available in classrooms and offices. The money is used to support families throughout their pregnancy journey.

FBLA advisor, Ms. Quaid, was asked if the club participates every year and if this is the time of year it typically happens. She said, “California FBLA incorporates this national philanthropy into our Program of Work. This is a document which our chapter works on at the beginning of the year; think of it as our planning or goals for the year. Our organization breaks down our program of work into various areas. Our VP of Public Relations/Community Service submits the POW each month to our section and state.

  • Graciela Lopez is one of the March of Dimes committee members.

  • Marisol Villegas is a March of Dimes committee member.

    '
  • Yosuni Rodriguez Cruz and Alexa Perez are also committee members.

If our chapter participates in this state project, then we must show evidence of our activities. If we submit on time (by February 2022) we are recognized at the Spring CA FBLA State conference. Also, the individual members who participated in the committee (preparing the boxes; distributing & collecting the boxes; and counting the returned boxes) are also recognized.”

When they were asked if they had any problems or issues this year, Ms. Quaid said, “Not really. We were hoping for more sign-ups since we have over 80 staff members; however, we realize the challenge with so many teachers not able to be in their own room the entire day.”

FBLA is about preparing and helping students become community-minded business leaders. They do this through career preparation and leadership experiences. The students participate in community service, competitive events, connecting with other FBLA across the state and USA, learning skills working in retail (Sammy’s Corner), education, and networking with Santa Maria Valley Chamber of Commerce members. “It is nice to see the Saints come together for a good cause!” said Mrs. Fulton.  More information about FBLA can be found here.

According to Marisol Villegas-Ramirez, SM FBLA Parliamentarian, “The most challenging part was sorting through all of the coins and bills, but it turned out to be great for my first state project!”

In total, the SMHS chapter of FBLA raised over $700! Mrs. Fulton’s fifth period class got first place (raised the most money) and won a pizza party. Ms. Quart’s 7th period came in second place and was awarded a donut party.
